DIY: Graduation Favors

It's graduation season, and my husband is finally getting his Executive Masters Degree in Business Administration from University of Hawaii.  While he's excited about graduation, I have my own reason to be giddy - DIY graduation favors!

As usual, I want the party favors personalized without spending a fortune. One reason to DIY!

While my favors seem like a lot of work, I actually had fun making them. Don't be intimidated with my million steps on how to. I just want to be elaborate as much as possible...

Here are the items I used to make my Mason Jars with Graduation Caps:

- 8oz mason jars, two dozen (from Target)
- 1 black poster board (from Target)
- liquid glue (from my daughter's drawer)
- Rattail string (from my lei supplies box)
- Full page label
- Hole/Circle craft puncher

- Scissors
- Tape
- Filler (I use Hersheys chocolate & macadamia nut kisses)

Here's how I organized my thoughts of making the favors:
1.  I made my tassels. Making the tassels was the most time-consuming part, and

that's why I did them first. You may also buy the ready-made tassels and skip this step.
(I found some, but wrong color, plus I'm not willing to pay $2 per tassel...)

20+ Tassels later...

2. Cut the poster board - (24) 3.75" x 3.75", (24) 1"x9"

Easy & faster to cut the board one time

Then measure the lid of the jar and tape the board strip

Puncture a hole in the middle with a safety pin
Picture
Then, use a toothpick to widen the hole
Picture
Use liquid glue to stick the round strip to the square board. Leave it alone for few hours, or best is overnight.

Insert the tassel through the middle hole on the cap and viola! it's a graduation cap!!!

3. Labels - printed labels on a full label sheet.  Having a circle puncher is not necessary.
(it just happened that I have one handy) You may use any shape label you wish.

As requested, here are my printable templates for my labels :)

4. Assembly - my favorite part! I got all the parts ready - caps with tassels, labels, jars & chocolates.
I filled the jars with regular chocolate & macadamia nut kisses. Why macadamia nut kisses?
Because it's so goooooood with blue wrappers, which will go nice with my blue tassels.
MEET MY GRADUATION MINIONS!

And my graduation favors are done!  I'm absolutely happy with how they turned out!

I'm so proud with these little graduation favors, but not nearly as proud as I am of my husband - having to work full-time active duty in the US Navy, and yet have pursued his Master's degree.

I'm a nursing counselor at a college, and I would LOVE to make these for our graduating class! Wanted to know if there is any way I may receive the file/copy to make the labels you used that say, "The Tassel Was Worth...". Please let me know. Thank you!

Hi Danielle, These are so cute! I am the Senior class advisor for my school and I will be making these for their senior brunch. I was wondering if you have the sticker template in Word form so that I may edit it with the students' names?
Thanks!

Hi Danielle, I realized that I replied under someone else's comment and I'm not sure that is the right way to get a message to you so....

Hi Danielle, simply love your ideas. How could I add the name Jared and make the tassel red (colors are red and grey). My son graduates this month and would love to use your idea.
